Files deleted “at all” – that is, from “Basket” of Windows (Recycle Bin), or from normal folder, but with the using of the keyboard shortcut Shift + Delete, the file doesn’t get into the “Basket ” – actually it isn’t removed. Windows only changes the first symbol in the name of the file, written in the file table of the drive, and then this file is ignored by the operating system.
Simultaneously the place is occupied by the file and it is marked as free – and from this point anything can be written here. Thus, the recovery operation is reduced to return the original file name and re-marking of the occupied place. The main thing is to have time to do it before Windows or one of the applications use “free” disk space for their needs.
Restore files utilities are included in many packages, ranging from the venerable and expensive, such as Symantec SystemWorks 2005, and ending free of charge, such as the Restoration.
Usually the use of these programs does not cause too much difficulty. However, when restoring files in Windows XP or 2000, you must make sure that the recovery program supports file system disk – FAT32 or NTFS.
To clarify what kind of file system is used on a particular drive, click on the icon in My Computer, then right-click – the icon of the disc. Next, click Properties and check out the File system.
After the failure
During the formatting of a hard disk (more precisely, its interface) a table which is recorded a file location is created. In Windows 98 and Me, the file system is FAT and FAT32, in Windows XP and 2000 – FAT32 or NTFS (NT File System).
This table in FAT32 is called the FAT (File Allocation Table), and NTFS – MFT (Master File Table). If this table is damaged – whether by action of the virus or as a result of formatting the drive – Windows cannot find the files on disk and restore them, you have to use more efficient (but more expensive) vehicles – up to appeal to the service bureau.
Recovery programs often create backup copies of the FAT and MFT, and in case of problems, replace the corrupted file table somewhat outdated, but the whole version. In the case when it’s impossible to correct file table a good recovery program will scan the drive trying to return at least those pieces of files that can be saved to the place.
Norton Disk Doctor from the package of SystemWorks, Scandisk in Windows 98 and Chkdsk from all versions of Windows will identify bad sectors and disk transfer data to “healthy ” sites. However, these utilities do not recover the lost data. For this operation requires other tools such as EasyRecovery.
This program scans your drive and looking files for the characteristic signatures, there are more than ninety of them in its database. If the file is identified by a signature, there is a chance to recover it. In addition, EasyRecovery if not entirely, then at least partially recovers not opening the text documents and Zip-archives
