As it’s known the reliability and fail-safe feature of the file system NTFS is the beyond praise The same can be said about the popularity of flash drives. But it doesn’t go about it. The problem is that by default you can format the flash drive by the regular operating system tools either into a file system, FAT, or FAT32 (but not NTFS!). The well-known programs designed to format / convert disk devices can’t help here.
There are several ways to solve this problem.
1. Right-click on My Computer icon from the shortcut menu, select Properties;
-in dialog box that opens named System Properties open the tab Hardware -> Device Manager;
-in dialog box named the Device Manager expand Disk drives with the double click open the properties of your flash drive;
-click the Policy tab, select Optimize for performance -> OK;
-close the dialog boxes in Device Manager, System Properties;
-click My Computer, right-click the icon flashes. From the shortcut menu, select Format … The option NTFS (instead of FAT) appeared in the Format the removable disk dialog box, in the drop-down list File System;
-format the flash drive into NTFS;
-set switch Optimize for quick removal: My Computer -> Properties -> Properties System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Disk drives -> Removable drive -> Properties -> Policy.
2. You can make it even easier by using the built-in utility to convert the file system convert.exe (File System Conversion Utility – \ WINDOWS \ system32 \ convert.exe). To do this run the shell: Start -> Run … -> Run -> cmd -> OK -> convert (letter of flesh): / fs: ntfs / nosecurity / x
For example, for flash drives H:
convert h: / fs: ntfs / nosecurity / x
This utility lets you convert flash file system without losing a data.
Attention!
- Although convert.exe utility lets you convert flash file system without losing a data it is recommended to copy all the data available on the flash drive, hard disk before performing the conversion!
-There should be free space on the flash to convert the file system. Otherwise you get an error message such as:
“… Evaluation of disk space required for file system conversion …
The total disk space: 1023712 KB
Free: 14328 KB
You need to convert: 15486 KB
It is not enough disk space for conversion
Conversion failures
H : was not converted to NTFS “
At this case release the desired location on the flash drive by deleting unneeded files (or copy some files on your PC hard drive).
3. You can use the free utility HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool.
Load and unzip the file HPUSBFW.zip. Plug the flash drive into an available USB-port.
-Copy all the data available on the flash drive into the computer hard disk.
-run utility HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool (file HPUSBFW.EXE).
-If several USB- devices are connected in the drop-down list, select the Device (the flash which you need to format).
- In the drop-down list of the File system select the NTFS (or, if necessary, FAT/FAT32).
-If you want set the mark in the text box Volume label (optional).
-To expedite the process select Quick Format.
-Click Start.
-HPUSBFW dialog box appears with a warning (in English) that all data on the flash drive will be destroyed. Click Yes.
-Wait for the formatting process.
- Click OK in the dialog box (with the results of formatting).
Notes
1. Be careful when choosing a device for formatting in order do not accidentally format the wrong removable disk that is required.
2. Before performing the formatting be sure to copy all the data available on the flash drive to the hard disk!
3. It is not recommended to format the flash drive into NTFS if you use it as a boot device.
4. It is not recommended to format the flash drive into NTFS if you use a hopelessly out of date Windows 98.
5. The formatting of the flash drive into NTFS not only allows you to forget about such scourge of FAT/FAT32 as lost clusters, but also it increases the reliability and durability of flash drives, and allows to increase the speed of reading / writing the data
