A history of CDs started relatively recently. In 1980, a standard for storing the information on laser discs was developed and published. Since the size of laser disks was much smaller than the size of the widely used vinyl records, they became known as CD-ROMs, or abbreviated as CD (Compact Disk). The first was developed by an audio CD that allows you to store up to seventy-four minutes of high quality stereo sound. The standard was called CD-DA (Compact Disk-Digital Audio, which translates as CD digital audio). It was published in the standard document called “Red Book”. All subsequent standards of CD-ROM also include a book of different colors: Yellow Book, Orange Book, White Book, Blue Book, Green Book.
At the beginning CDs were used exclusively in the high-reproducing apparatus, replacing the old vinyl records and cassette tape. Soon, however, laser discs were used on the personal computers. Computer CDs were called CD-ROM (Compact Disk – Read Only Memory). In the late nineties the device for use with CD-ROM has become a standard component of any personal computer, and the vast majority of programs were distributed on CD-ROM.
At the increasing volume of information processed by the computers, the problem of data storage and transfer information from one computer to another rose sharply.
Diskette volume was not enough for these purposes. The standard recording information on special CDs was developed. After recording the disc can be read on a floppy CD-ROM. CD-ROMs that support single write were called CD-R (Compact Disk – Recordable). At the beginning they were very expensive. In addition, the discs are not read by many of the older devices. However, the development of technology has decreased the price, and increased compatibility. Discs with the possibility of multiple recording appeared. It is CD-RW (Compact Disk – Rewritable). Currently, CD-R and CD-RW are the most convenient means of storing and transferring large amounts of information. In addition, these funds are the most accessible. The cost of storing information on CDs is less than on any other media.
CDs are used not only in music centers and computers. The version of the disc, called Video CD let the user to replace the videotape with the convenient and compact discs. However, this format is not widely used, and Video CD players released not so much. Kodak Photo CD is also not very common format; it is used to record collections of photos. There are several other types of discs, but they are less common. In most cases, CD-ROMs is used to store computer data or music.
