10. Be responsible with Student Credit Cards and Loans
With the economy as bad as it is, credit card companies are not making as much money on interest due to the fact that people just will not pay it, nor have the money to. The same companies are the one’s that have raised student loans up to a record high 35% in annual interest. Be careful not to over-due it and make your payments on time if credit is needed.
9. Save Your Change
Everyday, after you purchase anything, you should save your change in a coffee can or something similar. Each month, take your change to the bank to get an exact return on it. Don’t use CoinStar, etc. as they take out up to 8.9 cents per dollar. This is a great way to have some extra cash at the end of each month.
8. Eat Cheap
Eating cheap will save you ton’s of money. Don’t order pizza and have it delivered. Always use coupons. Buy in bulk and grocery shop. You can get much more for your dollar here. I lived off top ramen with spices and herbs in my college days! Brew your own coffee, don’t buy a $5 frappacino from StarBucks every day! Get a Brita Water Filter and don’t buy bottled water.
7. Save on Alcohol!
Why buy $7 beers at the football game? Just pregame and drink cheap beer! Going to parties will normally allow you to drink for free or charge a $5 door fee or something similar. This is way cheaper then going out to the bar and having a $65 night.
6. Buy Used Books
And no, not from the bookstore either! Buying them online can save you 50%+/- then buying used books at your school bookstore.
Save up to 99% on Giftcards to Subway, Target, Wal-Mart, Outback, + many others.
5. Utilize Free Campus Internet – Use Campus Computers
Don’t waste your money on a brand new computer or a monthly card from your cellular phone provider. Instead, why not walk on down to the library and use the schools free WiFi?
4. Don’t Drive
If you live on campus, or close to campus, how much money would you save each semester not having to pay for gas? Take a bus, ride a bike, walk. Get some exercise in the process! However, you can find a buddy to drive you around as well.
3. Fill out Essays for Scholarships – File a FAFSA
By searching a little bit, you can find many scholarship offers that just require a 500 word essay, etc. It is easier to fill out the ones for under $1000 as usually less people start to apply for these smaller scholarships. However, after filling out some, you’ll start to notice you don’t need to type any more essays and can just send the ones you have for various scholarship offers. Free tuition? Try filing a Financial Aid form from the government @ http://fafsa.gov – They will pay for your tuition, books, etc. if you qualify.
2. Take Maximum Number of Credits per Semester
Schools love when you take under ‘full-time’ student credits. If you take 15/semester, you can graduate in your 2/4/6 year format. However, by taking 12, which they call a ‘full-time student’ makes you have to take another whole year of classes just for your 2-year degree. Get the most out of your tuition!
